Feel the wind

[07 Feb 2009|01:32pm]
recently came upon a great big deal of HD space so i pulled out all my old CDs and started ripping them all, music that i lost with previous HD crashes/ipod thefts.

Gito Gito Hustler's gito gito galore album... damn this is really really good stuff.

2009 so far has been nothing but discovering great music i hadn't heard before and rediscovering great music that i used to listen to.

other than that i've been making use of my Netflix subscription as well as going to the movies a lot.

The Wrestler was great.

jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise was great.

saw Battle Royale again yesterday for some reason... i always liked how the soundtrack was all classical music.

culture [18 Jan 2009|05:04pm]

my friend is going (or went, she left today) on like a three month vacation and in order to raise funds she was selling a crapload of her books (and her boyfriend’s records). i contributed to her vacation fund by buying a bunch of cool shit. plus they were like $1 each. books AND records.

LPs

  • the beatles - magical mystery tour
  • lou reed - transformer
  • david bowie - heroes
  • the kinks - lola
  • bob dylan - blood on the tracks

books

  • cahiers du cinéma - the 1950s: neo-realism, hollywood, new wave
  • timidity: how to overcome it (mental efficiency series) by Yoritomo-tashi (really old, hardcover, really nice!)
  • being and nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre
  • a treasury of the world’s best-loved poems (1961, out of print, real nice!! i opened to a random poem and it was that one robert browing poem that ends with the NERV motto from eva so i had to buy it.)
  • notes from underground by fyodor dostoevsky
  • veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada by pablo neruda
  • collected stories by tennesse williams
  • bonjour tristesse by françoise sagan
  • lolita by vladimir nabokov
  • all she was worth by miyuki miyabe
  • 69 by ryu murakami
  • delta of venus erotica by anaïs nin
  • a personal matter by kenzaburo oe
  • great tales and poems of edgar allan poe
  • jonathan strange & mr norrell by susanna clarke
  • palm-of-the-hand stories by yasunari kawabata
  • the dharma bums by jack kerouac
  • as i lay dying by william faulkner
  • created in darkness by troubled americans: the best of mr sweeney’s humor category
  • the secrets of the heart by kahlil gibram
  • the procession by kahlil gibram

happy things [22 Dec 2008|06:45pm]
day #3: waking up early and driving on a highway for about 2 hours, very few cars. it was relaxing and good music was listening to. arriving at a spectacularly beautiful island, the first of a three night stay at an incredible beachfront apartment.

day #4: walking the beach by myself and taking pictures of these awesome abandoned tanks stranded on the beach.

day #5: stargazing at the beach at nighttime.

day #6: FINALLY getting home after what was supposed to have been a relaxing weekend but ended up being ultra stressful.

tagged [18 Dec 2008|09:30pm]
got tagged do this.

Rules: For 8 days you have to post something that made you happy that day. Tag 8 people to do the same.

gonna do today and yesterday

yesterday:

Drank until late with friends while talking about music and listening to music. discovered a bunch of great bands. The sonics, The fuzztones, The nerves, Los Saicos, Los pejotes. also, it makes me happy when i introduce music to people and they like it.

today:

ordered the Pierrot Le Fou poster from the criterion collection online store and bought the original manuscript of On The Road. aside from that, fairly shitty day. but i guess those two things made me happy. oh, and my uncle told me he's giving me his turntable/record player.

i'll be out starting tommorow until monday so i'll do those days when I get back.

Persona 4 [13 Dec 2008|01:27pm]
so I got persona 4.

it's amazing, better than Persona 3 imo.

it's so refreshing to be able to control your characters in battle. also, the characters are so much better and believable. they actually act and talk like high school students now instead of 30 year old rpg archetypes. and i love this new rural setting (yes i love twin peaks.) and the battle music is cool! haha.

man, the script/dialogue/voice acting in this game is super good. i love yosuke's voice, yukiko's laughing fits, chie in general... they all have great voices, very very believable. best english voice acting i've ever heard in a videogame. all the little sighs, chuckles, coughs, stutters... it's all in there. so good.

gamez [10 Dec 2008|06:42pm]
now that i took the jlpt and submitted the jet application, there's nothing to do (work kind of petered out into nothing) so i'm going through my game collection and finishing that which was unfinished.

dove back into Persona 3 today... didn't take too long to readjust, just a few minutes and i was rolling again. seriously, what a great game. I can't wait to finish it so I can get Persona 4! haha.

actually, before P4, i should finish: final fantasy XII, wild arms 5, .hack//GU vol. 3 (last one!) and ~maybe~ valkyrie profile: silmeria but that game isn't thaaaat great so i might not finish it.

still, there's a lot of work to be done before i can reap the benefits of playing Persona 4!

jlpt [08 Dec 2008|11:51pm]
i took the level 2 jlpt this sunday.

studied sporadically for three months before the test with grammar exercise books, practice exams and kanji flash cards.

i'm 99.9% sure i passed it.
